Coat and Skin Problems in Dogs

Coat and Skin Problems in Dogs

COAT AND SKIN PROBLEMS IN DOGS

The first thing we notice when looking at a dog is the condition of its skin and coat. It’s a real shame when a pet ends up with flaky skin and a dull, lifeless coat. So how do you get your dog’s coat looking shiny again? Let’s find out with BTM PET SHOP about COAT AND SKIN PROBLEMS IN DOGS.

The answer really comes down to PROTEIN and FAT, which you can find in some of the following foods:

  1. Pork skin, cleaned of hair and fat

Pork skin has 2.5 times the protein and 4 times the carbohydrates of pork meat, while its fat content is only about half that of pork. That’s exactly why it’s so popular with pet owners — it does a lot for a dog’s skin and coat.

  1. Egg yolks

Egg yolk is a food commonly added to a dog’s diet to keep its coat glossy. That said, be mindful of the amount — supplement as needed rather than feeding too much. In particular, avoid feeding your dog egg whites, since they can cause bloating and indigestion. If you want to save money, or if your dog is fully grown with a healthy, mature digestive and immune system, a soft-boiled egg yolk works well too.

For puppies, cook the egg thoroughly until fully done, since a puppy’s digestive system isn’t fully developed yet, and undercooked egg can lead to diarrhea and poor digestion.

  1. Omega-3 and Omega-6 oils

Omega-6, or adding safflower oil or sunflower oil, is great for a dog’s coat. If you choose to add oil, you can mix in about 1 teaspoon a day for small dogs, or 1 tablespoon for large dogs.

Omega-3 fatty acids help fight inflammation in dogs. Omega-3 is abundant in flaxseed oil and fish oil. This type of oil is very good for your dog’s health — and you probably already know how beneficial these two Omegas are for humans too.

  1. Raw beef or water buffalo meat

Every so often, you can feed your dog a bit of extra beef or pork. Raw water buffalo meat also works, as long as it’s genuinely fresh. Introduce it gradually rather than suddenly, to avoid diarrhea. This is a very common care practice for large dog breeds. But since raw food carries some safety risk, you need to be very careful when feeding it.

These meats don’t just provide protein — they also help nourish a healthy coat for your dog from the inside out.

  1. Star anise

According to folk wisdom, star anise is a great food for a dog’s coat.

Grind star anise finely and mix it into your dog’s food. This ingredient works like an herbal remedy that’s excellent for making a dog’s coat glossy. Apply it for a while and you’ll see how effective this method really is.

  1. Vitamins and other nutrients

Once you’ve made sure your dog’s food contains the necessary protein and fat in the right amounts to maintain healthy skin and coat, check for these essential vitamins and minerals in order: vitamin E, vitamin A, zinc, selenium, copper, iodine, and manganese. All of these are needed to control inflammation and/or support the growth of new skin and coat cells.
