THE IMMUNE SYSTEM IN DOGS

A dog’s body is a well-organized system, and even the smallest negative change immediately affects the state of its immune system. Naturally, this affects your pet’s health, making it harder for them to fight off various illnesses. To prevent this, pay attention to your dog’s health and, if necessary, take steps to strengthen THE IMMUNE SYSTEM IN DOGS

  1. Understanding a dog’s immune system

A dog’s immune system is a complex structure made up of many cells and organs that work together to protect the dog’s body against infections, toxins, and parasites. If the immune system is weak, the dog becomes an easy target for illness and won’t be able to fight it off effectively. That’s why keeping every component of the immune system healthy is so important for protecting your dog when it matters most.

The immune system includes: the skin, tears, saliva, other bodily fluids, the mucous membranes, the intestines, the urinary tract, the lymphatic system, bone marrow, the spleen, antibodies, and white blood cells.

  1. What weakens a dog’s immune system

Many different factors can negatively affect a dog’s immune system. Among the most common are:

  • Invasive worms and other parasites. They release harmful toxins that damage the intestinal wall, weakening immune function.
  • External parasites — fleas, lice, and other unpleasant “residents” of the skin and coat, which leave the dog more vulnerable to pathogens.
  • Malnutrition or a poor diet — leading to a deficiency in beneficial nutrients, which are the building blocks of immunity.
  • Antibiotic therapy — drugs in this class aren’t very selective and target beneficial bacteria along with disease-causing pathogens. This often leads to digestive upset and weakened immune function.
  • Stress is another common cause of weakened immunity in pets. Dogs are quite sensitive to things like travel, changing owners, or fights that trigger their own fear — in these cases, the nervous system itself can become impaired.

Parasite prevention measures. These are essential steps every owner should stay on top of. Deworming should be done 2–3 times a year, along with applying external parasite prevention products every 30–60 days.

A fully balanced diet. If feeding a natural diet, be sure to account for your dog’s need for meat, but don’t forget healthy sources of carbohydrates and fiber too.

Regular walks in fresh air. If your dog is healthy and alert, you should spend more time on active walks, with games and training included. This helps strengthen the immune system and keeps your pet in good health.

Don’t assume smoking only affects human health negatively. Secondhand smoke — inhaling cigarette smoke — is extremely harmful to dogs, especially those prone to allergic reactions or respiratory and cardiovascular conditions.
