Pet Grooming Scissors

Pet Grooming Scissors

PET GROOMING SCISSORS are a keyword on every Groomer’s mind today. The pet service industry is increasingly popular and expanding across the Vietnamese market. Alongside grooming for dogs and cats, grooming tools are also sought after by grooming enthusiasts — especially scissors for trimming pet fur. If you’re new to grooming, you probably have plenty of questions, such as:

How many types of grooming scissors are on the market today?

Where are they made, and how is each type used?

How durable and sharp are they, and how should they be cared for?

Why do prices vary so much between different scissors?

Let’s answer each of these questions together with BTM PET SHOP.

Pet grooming scissors are an essential tool for trimming and styling pets. There are basically three types.

+ Straight scissors: used to cut and shape large, flat areas such as the back, belly, legs and sides, and can also be used for general trimming. Compared with other types, straight scissors are highly durable and easy to use.

  • Origin: Japan, Korea, China, Taiwan, Germany, etc.
  • Weight: 500g
  • Size: 7 inch – 7.5 inch (≤ 20 cm)
  • Price: 500,000–4,000,000 VND

+ Curved scissors: as the name suggests, these scissors have a curved blade, making them the easiest of the three types to identify. They’re used to shape smooth, flowing curves — for a round “Boo” face trim, tail, waist, or neck; heart shapes, a peach-shaped rear, or a more elegant style — and are most commonly used for the round-faced “Boo” cut.

How to use pet grooming scissors

– To trim and style a pet’s coat well, you can’t skip practicing your grip. You need a firm hold on the scissors, with your fingers positioned correctly — something a Groomer can teach you. Once your grip and finger position are correct, you can start practicing the cutting motion and trimming. After some practice, you’ll be able to groom all four legs confidently.

What to keep in mind when using pet grooming scissors

– Because these are specialized scissors made only for trimming dog and cat fur, avoid using them to cut paper, fabric, or other materials. Their blades are built with very tight tolerances, and forcing them on other materials can dull or chip the edge, resulting in a rougher, less even cut.

– Avoid dropping the scissors, as this can damage or warp them and make them unusable.

– The blades are very sharp, so be careful during practice to avoid injury.

*Note: because dogs and cats tend to run and jump around and can be quite restless, always handle scissors carefully — curved scissors in particular can injure a pet if you’re not careful, with consequences that are hard to undo.

Proper use and care of your scissors: when you buy pet grooming scissors, they usually come with a leather case, lubricating oil, and a cleaning cloth. Use these accessories well to extend the life of your scissors.

  • After each use, wipe the scissors clean and remove any fur left on the blades and surface.
  • Once clean, apply a small amount of oil to the screws. Only use enough oil to do the job — too much is wasteful and doesn’t improve performance.
  • Finally, store the scissors in their dedicated case. Leaving them out exposes them to temperature and humidity, which can wear them out faster.
  • If the blades start to feel dull or chipped, take them to a reputable repair shop for servicing and restoration.

The most popular scissors today: prices vary with material and performance, ranging from a few hundred thousand VND to several million, or even tens of millions. Basic scissors can all trim fur, but for a smooth, professional finish you need a dedicated set that’s sharp and durable — an average price of 1,000,000–2,000,000 VND per pair is most reasonable. That’s also the advice of experienced Groomers, based on real-world experience; the most commonly used brands include Chonry, Aesculap, Top Dog, Geib, Rose Line, and others.

We wish you the best choice for your needs.
