CARING FOR YOUR DOG AFTER VACCINATION

Vaccination is no longer an unfamiliar procedure to dog owners. However, right after a vaccine shot, a dog’s body is quite sensitive and needs more special care than usual. Let’s find out together with BTM PET SHOP!

1. Avoid going outside or contact with other dogs: Many people skip this advice, assuming that a dog is perfectly fine right after vaccination and should go outside to build up its resistance. However, you should let your dog rest for at least 6–7 days after a shot. Its body is somewhat “under strain” during this window, since the vaccine is still doing its work inside. Contact with other dogs can easily lead to fights. On top of that, going out into the environment too soon will get your dog dirty faster, and of course, you can’t bathe them during this period either (at least 7 days after the shot).

2. Check the injection site: Some dogs, if vaccinated improperly, can develop an abscess (swelling and lots of pus at the injection site). However, a small “bump” at the injection site after the rabies shot in particular is completely normal — don’t confuse the two! If you press gently on the bump and your dog reacts with pain, that’s an abscess, and you should get it seen by a vet right away to prevent infection and pus buildup. On the other hand, if your dog doesn’t react, the bump is just leftover vaccine that hasn’t fully dissolved yet, and it will go away in a few days. Gently massage the injection site 2–3 times a day; the bump should go away within about 6–7 days.

3. Monitor your dog’s condition: In rare cases, a vaccine may be administered incorrectly, which can lead to illness. You should stick closely to the vaccination schedule, especially for the first 4 shots of a puppy’s life. After a shot, dogs are usually just a bit lethargic and tired for at most 1–2 days before returning to normal. If your dog shows signs of lethargy or fatigue, or doesn’t want to be active for longer than that, you should consult a veterinarian right away!
