- Why should you bathe your dog?
Unlike your body, tiny puppies don’t have sweat glands in their skin. As a result, their ability to release heat and exchange air and warmth is very limited. In cold regions, bathing pets is quite limited — some owners barely bathe their dogs at all.
However, in Vietnam, especially in areas with a hot, dry climate, bathing your pet is absolutely essential. Hot, humid weather is the ideal environment for harmful bacteria to grow and thrive on your dog’s skin. As a result, your dog’s coat can end up matted and clumped. This unintentionally creates the perfect conditions for skin parasites like mites and ticks to attack, causing skin conditions for our pets.
What’s more, your dog’s body can’t handle heat as well as yours can. So to avoid health problems, prevent odor, and keep your pet feeling relaxed and energetic, bathing is essential.
- How often should you bathe your dog?
The question is: how often is best to bathe your dog? Unlike you, tiny puppies don’t need a strict bathing routine. How often depends on factors like breed, coat type, living environment, health condition, and how active the dog is.
Dogs with a lot of outdoor activity, who love rolling around and playing in the dirt or on the floor, need more frequent baths than dogs that are less active and mostly stay home. Or, a very simple way to tell when it’s time to bathe your dog is to trust your nose.
If you’re close to your dog and you can immediately smell an unpleasant odor, that means it’s time for a bath right away. Or if you notice dirt stuck in your dog’s fur, thorough brushing during bathing becomes especially important.
In general, for any breed, you should bathe your dog at most once a week. For specific breeds, here are some more detailed guidelines!
- Poodle: Poodles have a lot of fur, and their skin tends to be oilier than other breeds. So we need to bathe Poodles more often.
- Pug and Beagle: these breeds have surprisingly short, smooth coats. To maintain the beauty of this coat, we should bathe them more frequently — about once every 2 weeks is appropriate.
- Basenjis: this breed has an amazing ability to groom its own beautiful coat. So bathing once every 2 months is most suitable.
- Husky, Alaskan Malamute, Golden Retriever: these breeds have thick, long, beautiful coats. To maintain and enhance this natural gift, you should brush and detangle their fur regularly so it can look its most gorgeous and healthy.
- Choosing the right time to bathe your dog
- Bathe your dog in warm weather. Weather that’s too cold isn’t suitable for bathing and can easily make your dog sick.
- Don’t bathe them too late in the day, since their coat may not fully dry, which can lead to skin and coat conditions.
- Don’t bathe your dog right after eating. Wait about 2 hours before bathing them.
- Don’t bathe puppies that are still nursing.
- Don’t bathe a mother dog that has just given birth.
- Don’t bathe a dog that’s sick or showing signs of illness.
- Don’t bathe a female dog in heat and preparing to mate, as it will reduce the scent that attracts male dogs.
- Don’t bathe a dog within 15 days of mating.
- Don’t bathe a dog that just got vaccinated, or one you’ve just brought home.
