Should you shave a cat’s fur?
A cat’s fur is where bacteria thrive most, especially in summer. Trimming it helps your cat avoid the infectious diseases bacteria cause. It also makes treating bite wounds from other animals, or infected, pus-forming sores, easier and faster.
Trimming a cat’s fur helps it feel more comfortable, especially during hot weather. In summer, a trim helps your cat release body heat more effectively. Long-haired cats have a coat that traps heat very well, which means poorer heat dissipation.
Poor heat dissipation raises body temperature and can cause symptoms like heatstroke, fever and lethargy — especially dangerous for cat breeds that originate from cold climates, such as the Maine Coon and the Norwegian Forest Cat.
Trimming a cat’s fur shorter also helps it avoid skin conditions and parasites. Long-haired cats are prone to skin fungus if their fur stays damp for long periods. Trimming also makes it easier to keep them clean and to treat any skin conditions.
Cats also love to run and jump, so their fur gets dirty quickly. Trimming a cat’s fur also makes bathing faster, since long fur makes it harder to clean out dirt trapped deep in the coat.
But you shouldn’t shave a cat unless it’s truly necessary!
